Cat losing hair!?

My cat is 8 years old (will be 9 next month), and she's losing her fur around the end of her body (close to tail and hindlegs). We are planning to take her to the vet again, but we can't afford it until a week or so. Are there any home remdies to help grow the hair back?? Please help! My sister thinks it's age.

The hair loss can be to flea allergy like the other suggested, but it could be allergic reaction to anything or it can be stress related.

Is she chewing or overgrooming that area causing the hair loss? This could be mostly a stress reaction, but could be to a parasite that is bothering her, too.

If the hair is just falling out, I would think it is more of a skin problem and they are numerous.

Have you changed type or brand of litter or one with a fragrance? Are you using a different carpet or floor cleaner? For the area of hair loss, I am thinking it could be a contact allergy and this would be the area of her body it would affect first.

Don't worry, 8 years is not old...my 'baby' is 8 and the oldest is 16, with a 10 and 14 yo in between.

Purrs to you and kitty.

Hi Field Daisy,

You are so welcome. Hope the fur loss is nothing serious.

Purrs,

Nine years is not all that old for a cat. I have 3 twelve year old cats that are still going strong. A few years ago one of them had this hair loss pattern. The hair grew back and she has not had the problem since then. It sounds like hormonal hair loss to me because of its location. Have you checked her for fleas? It could be a flea allergy. I doubt that it's anything to worry about.

My cat did that in the exact same place. and it ended up being an allergy to flea bites. which happens more in the fall and spring, and fleas like to bite right in that area of the animals, so you should take it to a vet as soon as you can, but I can tell you mine grew back the hair very quickly. I will just have to give him extra flea protection. Until you take her in, just keep an eye on her and if it begins to look too serious, get her in immediately.

Check for fleas. Many cats lose their fur because of flea allergies.

I don't think it's age. Eight is not that old for a cat.

My sister's cat lost fur once because of stress and lack of sunlight from hiding in the basement from the new dog all the time. Is there a new stressor in her life?

Cat losing hair!?

My cat lost hair due to the stress of moving 3 times in as many months. Is/are there new stresses in her life? It grew back, though.

I agree with that other person - hotspot. I had a cat do this and she was like 10 years old. It was just an itchy spot that they won't leave alone because it's irritating them. Call and ask them if there is a benadryl or something like that to put on it until you get the cat in to see the vet. If you can control the itch, they'll leave it alone and it will heal.
