You may look for food allergy. Please read this page for symptoms.

What did the vet say?

It sounds like mange. Do get him checked out, as it can be spread to your other dog too! He should just get some meds, and will recover soon.

take the animal to a vet they can probably tell you whats wrong

Could be just shedding, but if he is losing hair down to the skin, could be vitamin defiency, could be an allergic reaction too, hate to tell you but time for a trip to the vet..you can call the vet tho and he may be able to guide you at no cost.GL.Thumper

Take the dog back to the vet.

Even if your vet doesn't know why for sure, he or she will be able to advise you on how to treat this and rule out potential causes.

If its a food allergy you will probably end up buying something expensive with no fillers or by products. I have the same problem with my white pit bull and I switched over to wellness duck formula. Venison is really good for allergies too because duck and venison have not been used much in dog foods they have not developed allergies to them. It could be fleas from outside too, try putting a flea collar on just in case and see what happens. The food will take a little longer to show results but the itching if that is what he/she is doing should subside within a week or two of putting on the flea collar.

It's the dog food you feed. Both of the foods you've mentioned use corn as a filler. Some dogs develop allergies to it. It's not the greatest. I was using Iams which is more expensive than the brands you use, but my dogs still had shedding problems.

You can do one of two things and I guarantee you'll see an immediate difference. 1) add dinovite to their current food. This stuff is great. www.dinovite.com. It'll help with shedding, digestion issues, smelly breath, etc.

2) buy a holistic dog food, it'll be around $1 per pound of food, but your dogs will eat less, go to the bathroom less and you'll notice an immediate difference in their skin/coat and their overall wellbeing.

I switched my dogs to canidae and they're doing SO well. People are always commenting about what beautiful teeth and coat my puppy has. Seriously, they stop me on the street just to tell me how beautiful he is. His hair is like silk

Is there fleas in the house?

Maybe try a different food, something high quality with no dyes in it.

Could be allergies to something. The vet could check for allergies.

The vet could run some bloodwork. While running blood work they should check for thyroid conditons.

It could be anything.

I would drive farther and find another vet. It is either fleas. If you do not use a flea prevention you can get one at the pet store, K-9 advantage and frontline are good ones. Put it on once a month. Flea collars are no good. If he doesn't have fleas than it is an allergy to food or dust mites, pollen, etc. Your vet should know this. I just put my dogs on Natural Balance Potato and Duck. It also has omega 3 and 6 in it. That is a fatty acid that helps the dogs coat. (my vet told me to use that) Now new food can take up to a month before you see a difference. Stay away from lamb they are finding out dogs are allergic to that. I first used the foods you did too. I was told not too, nothing but problems. I also was told by my vet to stay away from beef, chicken, lamb and corn. Use fish, duck, venison, rice, potato, any of these combos would be good for your dog. I know it is not cheap, but its worth not seeing my dog miserable.

I would try a better quality of food. Innova, Nature's Variety, Canidae, Eagle Pack. It sounds like a food allergy to me and corn is one of THE most common allergies in dogs and is one of the most common ingredients in dog food (can you say cheap ingredient?) I would look for one that does NOT have corn or wheat in it's ingredients, I am betting that will help your dog a great deal. My Toy Poodle had that bad and lost half of his hair until he started on Eagle Pack years ago. He has also eaten all of the others mentioned and enjoys them. I also feed my dogs Chicken or Hamburg with rice (home made with beef or chicken broth over it). My brother was told to do this for his Pomeranian who would get those hot spots and chew his fur off.

For my poodle (and now all my dogs) all I did was switch his food to the kibble (a mixture of Innova and Nature's Variety Raw Instinct) in the morning and homemade in the evenings and his skin and fur is great.

My brother for his Pom also gets him cortisone shots (at the Vets) and antihistamines (and baby aspirin if he is in pain).

if u have already changed the dogs food and u havent noticed any changes u may want to have the vet run tests for thyriod problems!!
