I have seen this happen with animals with ringworm. I knew one animal that was just allergic to fleas that lost its fur.

A few animals I know of that got bald places had mange, and yes there is a type of mange cats can get called Notoedric mange also known as feline scabies.

I have even seen a cat that was just plain neurotic and pulled out his own fur by obsessive over grooming.

Basically without looking at your cat I can't know. And even a vet might have to scrape the skin and look under a microscope for mites or fungus to know for sure.

Sorry, but you should really take the cat to a vet.

He has allergies, he needs to go to the vet unfortunately! When you have a pet you know you are going to have to take them to the vet eventually so cut lunch out or something, he won't get better without vet care. he needs to see a vet and soon or he may lose his hair permanently. Find a low cost vet through the animal shelter or spca. and next time what I do is keep one credit card empty for just this reason, or keep a savings account just for my pets. I know it is hard to be poor but if you have a pet you owe it the responsibility of well being. Your cat is ill and needs a vet. After one little shot, my cats hair started growing back immediately and that was all it took.

I had a cat with the same problem at one time. Turns out, he was spending a lot of time sunning himself on windowsills and it was an old house with crappy Aluminum windows that would form condensation on the inside during the winter. The condensation would promote mold growth which was very hard to keep under control. Once we moved out of the house, all his fur grew back. Check out the places where he spends a lot of time and see if there might be some kind of environmental hazard.

The same thing happened to my cat. She lost the hair around her tail, down the back of her legs, and on her stomach. She also played and ate and seemed healthy otherwise.

Our vet said she had allergies. We changed her food and after a few months her hair grew back and we haven't had a recurrence.

I did read that feline hair loss can be a symptom of a serious problem.

Here's a site that lists the serious problems hair loss might be a symptom of and their other symptoms. http://cats.lovetoknow.com/Feline_Hair_L...

Ideally, it would be best to take the cat to the vet. Since you said you really can't afford to do that, check out the site and see if your cat has any of the other symptoms. If so, I'd take him to the vet right away.

I'm not sure if it will help your cat but our siamese had a similar problem and this is what we did and don't ask me how it works other than maybe it kills some kind of bug.We used w-d 40 and rubbed it into the areas that were missing fur and it got better and all the fur grew back.Use rubber gloves or latex as the the hair loss stuff could be contagious.Good luck to you.

The only way to know for sure is to take him to the vet. It could be ringworm, stud tail, mange, fur mites, allergies, an auto-immune disorder, etc. No way to know for sure without a vet looking. You could use lyme-dip or a good sulfur based shampoo and see if it works (do not use coal tar as it is highly toxic cats). Good luck!!!

Sounds like ringworm to me. Take her to vet if you love her

It could be mange. One of my cats had mange. It is some type of mite that causes them to lose their hair and the places will be itchy and red. My cat's mange went away on its on but you could try a medicated shampoo or a 2 to 3% lime sulfur dip. But you still should take it to the vet if it is really bothering the cat or gets even worse, since they would no more about this than me. Hope this can help!

My sister's cat has this problem and the reason she lost alot of her fur was because she was over grooming herself. There are alot of other cats and dogs in the house and she was stressed out so she would constantly lick herself and actually licked off all of her hair. Just thought I'd through that in!

it is normal a cat molts during the winter and summer ... if he is an indoor cat your A/C is probably to cold or to warm...

What you describe sounds serious. You need to at least Call a vet. Most vets will answer questions over the phone at no charge. Explain you are on a really tight budget, and ask if you can have a reduced rate, offer to volunteer at the vet's office for a day - even if it's just to sweep up or answer phones. Check the phone books for animal shelters - they can direct you to low cost vet aid. You really need to take your cat for help though.
