I'm worried that it will upset his digestion...I think the hair is coming off because he suffers from separation anxiety and he scratches at the constantly while we're out

Firstly , what is the breed of dog you've got ? some are more susceptible to skin conditions.

Secondly , how much olive oil are you adding to his food? it might be sensible to relate this to the size of your dog , like it might be foolish to feed a chihuahua , 2 tablespoons per day! or a Great dane a 1/2 a teaspoon.

If the dog is "worrying" that area by scratching or licking then there has to be an underlying cause , eg , mites , psoriasis etc or even fleas!! however , you say that he suffers from seperation anxiety , this alone may make him "self harm" Have you tried a DAP infuser ? this emits " calming female dog pheromones " that a female dog exudes when feeding her pups that have also have a calming effect on stressed dogs , these are available from your vets or from online vet supplies such as Vet uk ltd .They have worked for me with my dog when he returned home from a long term stay in hospital , ( he was sooooo stressed out and was literally foaming at the mouth)

I too give my dog olive oil in his feed on the recommendation of my vet , literally a teaspoon a day , he is a large dachshund and his coat is very very glossy , but being a dachshund he suffers from a skin condition called Acinthosis Nigricans , but this only affects dachshunds , the olive oil seems to help this also , not by rubbing it on- but by ingesting it!!

If all else fails , give it a short time to improve , but a trip to the vets may be the only solution , and to get positive help on the seperation anxiety syndrome

Olive oil is fine - I know people who also put a lump of butter on their dog's food to keep their coat healthy.

Well the olive oil is fine but not every day. Every other day is ok. If it is stress related then you need to work on that but I'd still mention it to your vet just in case there is a underling factor like an allergy to something first.

I add an egg and some Tuna with oil in my dogs food. He has the shiniest coat ever. It could be the central heating drying out your dogs skin as well. Try rubbing some Sudocrem on the dry patches it worked for one of my dogs like a charm. Shame poor doggie-woggie, Happy new year to you:))

sounds like your dog is developing a type of eczema, continue with the olive oil rubbed into the skin ,and not in his diet,for his diet get foods which contain wheatgerm oil which is very good for his digestion and general overall health

You said his skin was dry, so why would you feel it's separation anxiety? I think you should feed good food, and you should give him Flaxseed oil or Omega3 oil, and you should stop bathing him, make sure he has plenty of water.. Exercise him more and crate him when you leave.

I give olive oil to my greyhound because she has really dry skin and she's fine with it. If a greyhound can stand it any dog can (they have really sensitive stomachs). As for your diagnosis, I wouldn't know. It could be a rash, maybe ring worm or mange or something (don't hold me to this, I'm not a vet). You should take him to a vet whether or not this gets better. If it is a rash it could be contagious to humans, and you could catch it. Good luck!

Depending on what kind of dog it is because many dogs have sensitive stomachs that cannot handle much but, olive oil seems like a good plan for dry skin.

Now with the hair loss under his armpits.. Go to your local vet to check that out because if there is also hair loss for instance, around the eyes and muzzle it is not uncommon for demodex(mange) to occur around this time of the season.

Take the dog to your trusted veterinarian. Your veterinarian went to school for this stuff and will know whether or not a "simple fix" like dietary additives may help or if they may be harmful.

The most common cause of dry , itchy skin is allergies to their feed ingrediants . Grains are the worst, so try a kibble with no wheat or corn. Nutro and other kibble available at good pet stores can be grain free (check the label carefully).If you don't see a change in a couple of weeks try something like lamb and rice or fish and potato kibbles.

Olive oil is safe but it will do little for the coat. Oil oil mainly aids the digestive tract and immune system. You need to take him to a vet to find out if there is any form of skin condition causing this. From what you discribe it sounds like ringworm but you want a proper diagnosis so please go to the vet.
