Why is my dog losing hair under his neck and why does his skin look raw and scabbing?

I just noticed today that under my dogs neck is raw and scabbing and he's also losing his fur there also. Can anyone tell what they think this may be caused by and what can I do at home to help him if anything?

Does he normally wear a collar?? It could be from a collar being to tight and leaving him raw and scabby. Also it could be a hot spot. I'd see a vet to make sure that there isn't anything serious going on. They'll be able to tell you for sure what is up. Good luck

that is usually found in dogs that are tied out. you will need to use a harness on him instead of a collar so it can heal. it will take quite some time but can get much worse.

you also need to be concerned about maggots this time of year

your dog could have allergies, the vet will prescribe steroids and antobiotics

take the the dog to the vets it might have cancer and or it might be a allgery to flea bites

I was having the same problem with my Beagle.

Her hair kept falling out and scabbing would form.

When I took her to the vet, he told me it was most likely an allergy and she was given antibiotics. They did help her tons, however, she recently got it back.

Now I'm using a cortisone cream with aloe on her skin and it is helping; I don't want her to be on antibiotics again.

One time they also gave her a cortisone shot but I like to stay away from those too.

So I would suggest using a hydrocortisone cream [you can get them at any pharmacy]. It would also be great if the cream has vitamins or aloe vera or something with will sooth the area. Try that first [it's cheaper of course]; if it doesn't work, then take your dog to the vet.

The same thing happened to me.

My female basset hound had it HORRIBLE. My family knew it was from the collar she was wearing but we thought it was just to tight. So we bought her a new one and kept it on....welll....it got worse. The collar was really lose too.

So we took her to the vet. Apparently she was allergic to nylon [what most collars are made of] The vet said the lose of hair, rawness and scabbinng was all because she was allergic to this collar and she just kept wearing it.

So to help him. : ditch the collar. Take the collar far far away. Try getting a different type. At some hunting stores have really good collars. There is one, which is kinda expensive, where the nylon is underneathe and theres like a plastic covering. or you could get him a choke collar. Its made of metal. Dont keep it on him all the time. Only keep it on when hes walking.

I hope I helped because I've been going through this for the past 2 years!

maybe it is because he is scratching his neck too much or too hard.

He has allergies, and where have you been if you are just noticing raw skin? You need to get it to the vet and determine if the allergy is food or environmental. If it is the later, you may never be able to correct the problem, as it is very difficult to narrow the cause down. If it is food, changes in diet can be made. If the neck is seeping body fluids, it can become infected. The skin is very sensitive and your dog is likely in pain. Seek help.

My dog has recently been on steroids, antibiotics, and thyroid. He had an ear infection, and a yeast infection, although I don閳ユ獩 know how the vet treated that. A lot of what it was is that he was losing his fur due to constant scratching. Well, let me go in more detail. My dog was on antibiotics because of a bacteria infection. although I閳ユ獡 not 100% sure of that. Anyway, the steroids where giving to relief his inching after being giving anti-inch mediation since it didnt work, this was to help grow his fur back. It so happened to work greatly. He was giving thyroid medication for, well thyroid levels. Bottom line is he is that he is off of all that medicine but thyroid because the vet wont give us anymore medicine untill they take more test. and ever since he was taken off everything else. He is scratching, biting, and ect than ever before. Whatever he does, now his butt is bare, red, and dry, and a part of his tail is nearly raw and disgusting. We called the vet and asked why. They said that it could have been his ears. YA... RIGHT!

When he was brought to the vet we where told the same exact symptoms as previous answers such allergies, allergic reactions, ect. I just wanted to share with you that story. So really in my opinion after going through it myself. I don閳ユ獩 now what to tell you. I am 20 years old and I observed my parents go to everything to help our dog. They have spent over 1000 dollars trying to help and treat my dog, and now I閳ユ獡 afraid that they have given up. That is my advice, do not give. Good luck in trying to find the problem. Take care
