Losing lots of hair after baby....................?

I know it's normal to lose some hair after having a baby due to hormones and all that, but my son is 8 1/2 months and I am still losing hair, not a little bit at a time but I'm talking about handfuls. It's starting to scare me a bit. I brush my hair through before my shower to get out all the loose ones, yet the shower drain will be clogged when I'm finished!! I have long hair (mid way down back) and my ponytail is only 1/2 inch thick if I'm lucky!

Has this happened to anyone and what did you do to fix it?

I lost alot of hair after my first - so much so that my husband joked about me looking more like my dad (who has just a rim of hair around the ears) everyday. Mine started about 6 months after delivery and lasted about a month. It got quite thin - not nearly as bad as my dads - and them slowly started to grow back in to a more normal pre-pregnancy level.

Just give it time, continue to take your vitamins, make sure you get enough protein in your diet, and if you need to - talk to your OB/GYN. You might also try talking to your hair dresser and see if she/he can help you with a good cut to bring back some fullness to your hair.

Good luck - I know it's scary to see all that hair in the drain!

edit - PS It's normal to lose the "pregnancy" hair. All my friends who have babies say it has happened to them!

Make sure your taking vitamins and drinking lots of water.I haven't had this problem, but I would suggest talking to a doctor about it too.

Great question. I have a 4 month old and having the same problem. My husband says its stress. I feel like I am going bald!! Hope you get some good answers!

Yes this is very normal. You tend to loose more hair when you have a girl due to hormones. I had it extremely bad after having my twin girls. Your hair will thin out after every child you have. And sorry Hon, but there was no way for me to fix it.

I just had a baby 2 weeks ago ( she's born 2 week earlier ). I read a book, it's normal loosing hair abt 6 months. Don't worry, you won't be bald.

So far, I haven't had it yet. Hopefully I won't loose a lot,since I have thin hair ( I have long hair ).

My daughter is only 4 months old, but I totally keep clogging the drain with my hair! Granted, I have very thick, long hair down to the middle of my back, but I pull it out also in clumps when I take shower! It's a pain to un-clog that thing! Heheh!

I'm about to start taking prenatal vitamins again, my midwife said it'll stop some of the hair loss.

I had the same thing happen to me! I didn't know that women lose hair after childbirth and finally I went to a hairdresser because I actually got a bald spot right in the front of my head! It looked so crazy. I pulled handfuls out too. I'd show people, just because it was so unbelievable and terrifying. After months and months and months, mine did finally stop falling out. My bald spot did barely grow back and it is 5 years later. Totally normal! Your body is still adjusting from your pregnancy. Its crazy how many things are affected and change even months later. You'll be fine though.

Each time I had a baby, I lost more hair. Originally I was told

it was due to the anethesia. But my hair never resumed it's

original thickness or hair texture. I had a hair loss in highschool due to an allergy to a well known shampoo. My

doctor perscribed a medicated shampoo with coal tar in it.

And that made new follicles appear with bristles all over my

head. And they all grew into new hairs.

It can also be due to vitamin/mineral depletions. So that

you'd find out from a blood test aimed at finding that. So visit

your doctor, explain your problem, and ask for a blood work

to find out what may be the underlying problem. I'd think you

are too young for "male pattern baldness", so do yourself a

favor and go see your doctor soon.

It is normal to lose some hair, my hair loss was around my hairline. I would suggest speaking to your dr. to check your thyroid. My Endocrinologist (diabetes, thyroid) said changes can happen to your thyroid after birth. Good Luck
