I have a 15yr old Shepard Collie that has been losing a lot of his hair in his back right above the tail. Over the past year he has been slowly been losing hair is this region, but I figured it was due to his age. We discovered that he had a tumor in his testicles that was causing high levels of testosterone, which in turn made it difficult for him to urinate. In addition, our vet related the high testosterone to the slight hair lose, but once the tumor is removed his hair should start growing back within 3-6 months.
The tumor has been removed 1 month ago and his urinating has greatly improved, but his hair lose now is spreading. The skins is crusting up and peeling away. It looks very dry and brittle, it continues to flake off. Now he has a big patch in his back missing. What could be the possbile causes of this? Is this a normal process before the new hair starts growing or is it something more serious?
thanks

I suggest that you take him back to the vet and have him examined again. Because the tumor was removed a month ago he shouldn't be having more hair loss. Go to the vet and have a skin scraping done to make sure that there are not any mites that could be causing it. Also dogs are prone to getting hypothyroidism that can cause hair loss. They will do a blood test to check for this. Another possibility is a food allergy. Have you switched his food recently? Even if you haven't he could have developed an allergy to the food he is on.The only way to know for sure what is going is to have a vet check it out. Good Luck

Has the vet checked your dog's thyroid level (a simple blood test)? Done a skin scraping? The two most common causes of hair loss in dogs would be a thyroid problem or a skin disease.
