My horse are losing there hair!!?

one of my mares,is losing her hair. yes i know winter is over. but she is not just losing the winter hair. she is losing her coat. all of it. it started around her girth area and than it is on her shoulders and back were my jumping saddle will sit. and in between her legs. in are pasture 115 acres out of 32 horses 28 have been losing hair. my young gelding has not. the vets are totally lost. i've had 3 out since this has happened. any idea. oh more info. in alabama there have been 32 cases at barns about this werid hair loss. thank you for any help i can get.

Fist of all is it just winter hair shedding or actual hair lose? If it is hair lose take a sample of the hair to your vets and have them look at it for any fungi that they may have picked up and for lice and mange,could it be rain rot?Are your horses in a lot of rain. If none of these are a factor I'd get a good disinfect and start cleaning the barn and the horses which i believe should be done at least twice a year regardless of any out breaks of any thing it just keeps these types of things from occurring anyway. Good Luck don't forget to get samples from all that are showing systems of the same thing and label which came from who.

I've heard alot of this this year I'm stumped maybe it's just dead hair their shedding for a new coat without seeing it I'm baffled. Thanks for the vote hope it clears up wash your brushes if it's something int he brush you could spread it .Wash the area with castile soap. Report It

i think its just shedding but depending on the amount of hair being shed it could be something more... i'll ask my sister when she gets home... shes a horse vet... ill write back asap but im pretty sure its just shedding-dont worry =]

personally, i wouldn't worry about it.....yet. several years ago my mare (who was 9 at the time) also started losing her hair. as long as there are no sores or irritation to the skin i wouldn't sound the alarm. it could just be a dry skin problem. as was the case with my horse. it was so bad with her that she looked bald in places and the hair grew back in a much darker color. a friend of mine also had the same problem. i don't think it's all that uncommon. especially during the shedding months. some helpful tips.........on the next nice, warm day bathe the horse with a medicated shampoo (just in case of fungus). groom at least daily. twice a day is better. get a good spray on conditioner and use it a few times a week and be sure to spray the roots of the mane and tail as well. these thing really helped my horse out. and during my next show a few months later she won her breed class and her grooming class. she shined like a new penny.

Not sure when you posted your problem but if it is recently your horses may have rainrot. We have a few horses that have it, now. We live in southern missouri and the on and off again weather is the culprit. An inexpensive cure is to bathe in a peroxide medicated shampoo. You may want to look on line to see the symptoms match what your horses are having. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
